A sanctuary for breeding wading birds, the geopark is the most important area in the English uplands for these iconic species.The North Pennines contains 27% of England’s blanket bog—an essential carbon store that plays a key role in capturing and storing carbon dioxide.The Pennine Way National Trail, a 435 km long-distance walking route, passes through the geopark from the northwest to the south.
